New Moon in Pisces

Pisces is the most sensitive sign of the zodiac, being a mutable (changeable, flexible) water sign, and also the final sign of the zodiac. This doesn’t mean necessarily that everyone who is a Pisces is sensitive, but it does mean that there is a potential for the issues that Pisces represents to be a part of the focus of a lifetime for someone born under that sign.

Being the final sign of the zodiac, it represents the final stages of development of a soul cycle, one of many. It is often characterized as a finishing up cycle, where the mind and heart have the potential to open up to the grandness and wonder of physical and spiritual existence, as well as the depths of its suffering. (Pisces rules the tear ducts). For oftentimes when we are at the end of a cycle, there is a lot of finishing up of unaddressed issues that present themselves. In many ways, our own world society is at such a stage. Many believe that where we are now is at the end stage of an approximately 2000 year old cycle, the Age of Pisces, meaning that we are at a place where the duality that it represents (two fishes swimming in opposite directions) must be harmonized with the growing awareness of our oneness, our  universal connections to each other, regardless of race, creed, or lifestyle. Such is the Age of Aquarius we are at the beginning stages of stumbling into.

The cost of maintaining a society based upon separation, prejudices, judgements, class and caste-based divisions, is the denial of our true nature: kindness and sensitivity. In order for us to maintain a warrior culture, with most of our resources dedicated to developing weaponry of one sort or another, we must deliberately obliterate and disown the natural impulses for sensitivity. Our media are filled with violent imagery. We’ve created a fascination with destructive narratives, and so our collective world view becomes one based upon suffering, violence, segregation, and separation.

At this New Moon, Sun, Moon, Neptune and Venus are all in Pisces. Venus and Neptune are two of the most archetypally feminine symbols in the zodiac, representing vulnerability, receptivity, and the innate wonder and mystery of the soul and its exploration of Creation. Neptune is the ruler of Pisces, and as it is in its own sign, it’s strongly calling us to swim in its luxurious depths, to deepen our awareness of what is possible for humans to realize. During this month, our dreams are of paramount intensity. Possibilities for learning from our night as well as day dreaming are now greater than at any other time of the year.

Soon we will be jumping into Aries, after the Equinox on the 20th, a time of springing into action and making new starts. So use this time until then to explore the deeper aspects of the connections you have to friends, trees, the Earth, energies, your imagination, and your dreaming, to uncover pathways that are healing for yourself and your environment. In order to make these connections one must deepen one’s listening, turning up one’s sensitivity to the kind of input that inspires ourselves and others. As J. Krishnamurti wrote: “Right education is through the cultivation of sensitivity; and sensitivity must be cultivated, not just at the particular period of growth called adolescence, but throughout one's life...”

Also at this juncture, Chiron and Ceres are very tightly conjoined. This conjunction only happens once in 5 years. Chiron is the archetype of the healer whose wounds are his initiation, continually deepening the understanding of one’s suffering to bring a depth of meaning that transcends ordinary life. The presence of Ceres, the Great Mother archetype, conjoined with Chiron just 7 hours after the New Moon, to me signifies a kind of blessing around all the suffering we’ve experienced in the past, a way of healing the wounds to our psyche that seem chronic or intractable. Since they’re both in Aries, it’s about making a new start in some way, both individually as well as globally. Perhaps the new start is about reaching out in new ways toward others, building or re-building relationships that nurture us, allowing us to transcend our old patterns, so that we can be curious and open to new ways, new paths forward.

There is a great deal of creativity also in this chart, and with Mars in an approaching trine to Saturn (exact March 21st) innovative ideas can be made manifest. There is much good work to be done, and we are poised to be inspired to make changes!  Keep track of your dreams and imaginings, and perhaps even the connection to that still, small voice within that speaks of possibility, gently and with kindness.

All charts here are using Natural House system: i.e. the Ascendant is always at 0˚ of Aries.
