Equinox, a time where the light on the Earth is exactly perpendicular to the Sun, even though it is tilted on its axis by nature. It’s a point in the orbit where things seem to balance themselves on Earth, potentially. It’s a time of equal day and night all over the planet.

Balance. Libra. The sign of the scales. The only sign that has as its symbol an inanimate object. To be less identified with our human animal self, and more of our human being self is Libra’s advantage. It’s an air sign, and it’s a cardinal air sign, meaning it sets the tone for the season which follows, until Solstice follows in December.

Balance. Much hangs in the balance on our planet right now. We are at a crossing point in terms of our choice to let go of the old ways of capitalism, the pursuit of progress over the needs of the people, and the needs of human beings over the needs of the plants and animals of our delicate ecosystem. This equinox coincides four days later with the Jewish holiday of Rosh Hashanah, a time period of self-examination, when the book of Life is open, so that we may be written into it for another year.

The chart for the Equinox on September 22, shows the Sun opposed by Jupiter. Typically this is an aspect that indicates overexpansion, too much too fast, as well as personality traits that can veer into arrogance or being unrealistic with one’s ability to fulfill responsibilities. Thus, as we head now toward the darkest time of the year in the Northern hemisphere, we are called to look at where some of this energy may inform us as to where we need to pull back, become more humble, more realistic with how we spend our energy, and how many promises we make.  Since the Sun also widely opposes Neptune as well, this colors the aspects with even more potential for delusion or self-importance. Since narcissism the world over seems to be highly in vogue right now, in our culture, our arts, our politics, our media, we may take some time to see where we ourselves have been infected with the rush to aggrandize ourselves, our careers, our relationships, and instead pay close attention to attention itself, through quiet time and meditation, to be able to listen to our inner voice of wisdom.

With Mercury, Jupiter, Chiron, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto all retrograde at this time, we may feel a very strong inward draw to re-evaluate ourselves, our path in life, and to look at how we may stop the over-emphasis on expansion, before the whole planet runs us into the ground. Already we are seeing the effects of our grandiosity as human beings reflected to us meteorologically. It’s as if Nature says, “you want Super-Size? I’ll give you Super-Size!”

What we can change is how we spend our energy, the thoughts we think, the stories we are telling ourselves and each other. These DO make a difference in the overall energy signature of the planet, however tiny we may perceive it to be. The Sun in Libra now for the next month emphasizes relationships, partnerships. Whether it’s a full-scale war, or a war with ourselves or our partner, violence only delays and exacerbates resolution. Become aware of how the trauma you’ve inherited, in whatever form, can be passed along by a casual conversation, an argument, or actions that break with integrity. And also how in each moment our world hangs in the balance of choice, to avoid or to heal.
